How It Works

Services for Ship Owners, Operators, and Ship Managers

Ursus Maritime Capital provides a complete turnkey solution to ship owners wanting to cut energy costs, carbon emissions, and meet other environmental requirements through investments in ship retrofits and newbuild projects. We provide the capital needed for these projects, as well as the technical expertise to install, monitor, and consult on all aspects of ship energy efficiency and emissions.

We engage in two areas of fuel cost control:

  • Installing a mix of fuel efficient technologies that reduce the daily fuel consumption of Globally-trading ships.
  • Retrofit ships to meet sulfur emissions requirements via Exhaust Scrubber installations or LNG dual-fuel engines.

Ursus Maritime Capital requires no net capital expenditure from our customers, and we offer the ship owner:

  • A portfolio of proven, market leading, energy saving solutions.
  • Negotiations with long-term charterers and operators to maximize possible savings share to the ship owners.
  • Design, testing and installation of all agreed solutions.
  • Follow up with technology providers.
  • Post-installation monitoring and maintenance overview.

Ursus funding is repaid by sharing the bunker fuel savings or increased charter hire achieved by the solutions implemented.  Third-party Performance Monitoring companies are used to track the achieved results and trends over time and to ensure continuous results.

Ursus seeks a fair split of the savings between all parties involved in each project, and always considers the effect of the market dynamics, operating conditions, and relationship with charterers, where the ship owner does not directly keep all of the achieved savings.  The payments are structured in a manner where the actual savings are greater than any payment to Ursus.

Guaranteed Energy Performance Contracts

Services for Ship Owners, Operators, and Ship Managers

Guaranteed Energy Performance Contracts (GEPC) are a low-risk method of implementing ship fuel efficiency and emissions projects across a fleet. The bunker consumption savings proposed in a GEPC are guaranteed by Ursus for the full term of the contract, usually between 4 and 10 years. The longer payback period and robust risk management enable large scale projects with greater impact on the vessel's performance and tradability.

By employing Ursus services, we manage the upgrades from start to finish and guarantee the implementation and all of the savings.

An Ursus GEPC goes well beyond simply selecting & installing the upgraded equipment.
Ursus works closely with an owner's Fleet Managers, Crew, Chartering, and Operations personnel, to set KPIs and other goals, routinely offering training to help instill the needed mentality. We ensure that all fuel saving benefits from can be extracted from operations means, to maximize the total potential.

The technical upgrades can be financed either by Ursus and built into the GEPC, or directly by the shipowner.

For a Fuel Efficiency project, the contract is based on the bunker consumption savings achieved.
For an Emissions project, the contract is based on the price differential between HFO bunkers and MGO/ULSFO or LNG prices.

Performance improvements are verified using CFD model tests, sea trial comparison, and 3rd-party performance monitoring software findings, to come up to a mutually agreeable improvement target and goal.

Ursus is technology agnostic, and focuses on the most suitable and proven technologies for each ship and its specific operating parameters.

Owners own funds are not always available to invest in projects that are not core business and in a difficult market. Ursus offers a range of funding solutions.

When using Ursus funding as part of our Guaranteed Energy Performance Contract (GEPC), it is structured as an off-balance sheet and as part of the contract payment for the energy monitoring and turn-key project management. The payments are tied to the expected savings, and can scale depending on trading patterns and bunker prices, and (where applicable) to the time charter premium for the upgrades.

Better still, the investment will be cash-flow positive, enabling you to still saving during the repayment stage.

Through our funding contracts, Ursus retains ownership of any equipment installed until the end of the contract, at which point the ownership of the equipment transfers to the shipowner for a pre-agreed nominal value. Contracts can be repaid early, or are transferrable to a new owner.

Ursus can work with your Charterers or Pool Operators, to make them an integral part of the GEPC and where possible have the payments for the GEPC be shared with them.

In cases where Ursus funding is not utilized, Ursus can still help minimize the impact by offering services like:

  • Access to grants and other development funding options for green projects, to minimize cost of capital.
  • Work with primary lenders to effectively pitch the benefits of extending credit for an efficiency or emissions upgrade project
  • Work with other stakeholders to offer green discounts, such as the Liberian Registry, Panama Canal, etc.
